Introduction

Welcome to our rugby law training website specifically designed for referees.

Our goal is to provide comprehensive training on the laws of rugby, with a focus on ensuring that referees have the knowledge and skills necessary to enforce the laws effectively and consistently on the field.

Our training program covers all 21 laws of rugby as established by World Rugby, the international governing body of the sport. With the guidance of SA Rugby our modules are designed to help referees understand the laws in depth, including the nuances and interpretations that can affect decisions on the field.

We place a strong emphasis on the key focus areas of the game that require a referee's attention, which include:

  • Scrums: Our training program will help you understand the intricacies of the scrum, from setup to engagement and beyond.
  • Breakdown: We'll provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage the breakdown, ensuring that players adhere to the laws and the game flows smoothly.
  • Space: Our training will help you understand how to manage the space on the field, including offside lines and the management of the tackle area.
  • Foul play: We'll provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and manage foul play, ensuring player safety and fairness.
  • Communication: Our training will help you develop effective communication skills, enabling you to effectively manage players, coaches, and other officials during a match.

Speed Up Play by:

  • Encourage referees to be alert to quick throw/set when ready at the lineout to reduce the amount of time the ball is out of play.
  • Discourage negative actions such as throwing the ball away, holding onto the ball at penalties (7's application), and no huddles at the lineout, all of which can slow down the game.
  • Promote the use of "use it when the ball is available" at rucks, applying a 5-second limit to minimize stoppages.
  • Apply time limits at conversions and penalty kicks to keep the game moving.
  • Stop the time on reset scrums to prevent teams from using them as an opportunity to slow down the game.

Fair Contest (BD sequence for example)

Create an environment for players to play.

Players should be allowed to play their preferred style, rather than being restricted by the referee's style.

Referee what matters – Best Game Decision (BGD)

  • This means focusing on the key aspects of the game that have the greatest impact on the outcome and flow of the game, such as player safety, fair play, and the integrity of the contest. While it's important for the referee to be familiar with the laws and regulations of rugby, they should also have the discretion to interpret and apply them in a way that supports the BGD.
  • This may involve making quick decisions based on the context of the game and the players involved or using common sense and practical judgment to ensure a fair and enjoyable experience for all participants.
  • Ultimately, the referee's role is to facilitate a safe, fair, and enjoyable game for all involved, and making the BGD is crucial to achieving this goal.

Referee Leadership

  • Running the game: The referee is responsible for ensuring that the game is conducted in a safe and fair manner, and this requires strong leadership skills. Referees must be able to make quick and decisive decisions, enforce the laws of the game, and maintain control over the players and other officials.
  • Open communication channels: Effective communication is essential for a successful game. This can involve providing clear instructions, always maintaining a professional and approachable demeanour.
  • Player management: Referees must be skilled in managing player behaviour, both on and off the field.
